Safeguarding

Keeping young people safe is the first job.

Last updated: 27 July 2026

Before publishing: confirm the items marked [confirm] — Working with Vulnerable People registration, your named safeguarding contact, and your insurance position. These are the claims a parent will check.

We work with people aged 16–22, which means some of our participants are children in the eyes of the law. This page sets out what we do about that.

Our commitments

  • All facilitators hold a current ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration [confirm registration details].
  • Sessions are run by trained facilitators grounded in psychology and safeguarding practice.
  • No participant is left alone with a single adult without a second adult present or in sight.
  • Participation is always voluntary. Nobody is required to share anything, and anyone can step out at any time.
  • What is shared in the room stays in the room — with the exceptions below.

The limits of confidentiality

We say this out loud at the start of every session. We will break confidentiality if we believe someone is at risk of serious harm, to themselves or to another person. Where possible we will tell the young person first, and we will follow ACT reporting obligations.

What we are not

We are not a therapy service, a counselling service, or a crisis service. Our facilitators do not diagnose or treat. Where someone needs more support than we can offer, we will say so and help them find it.

If you need help right now

  • Emergency — 000
  • Lifeline — 13 11 14 (24/7)
  • Kids Helpline — 1800 55 1800 (24/7, ages 5–25)
  • 13YARN — 13 92 76 (24/7, for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people)

Raising a concern

If something felt wrong — at a session, in a conversation, or in how someone behaved — please tell us. Email hello@extraordinarylife.org and it will reach our safeguarding contact [confirm named person and role] directly.

We will acknowledge your concern within two working days, take it seriously, and tell you what we are doing about it. You can raise a concern anonymously, and you can raise one about us.

You can also contact ACT Children and Young People Services on 1300 556 729, or the police, at any time. You do not need our permission and you do not need to tell us first.
